!earshot magazine (Vancouver) review of Sad Truths an Innocent Lies

Sad Truths & Innocent Lies

!earshot Radio

What is it about small-town Canada that makes people want to make folk music? And why are all the best bands from these towns? From New Liskeard, Ontario, a small town on the Quebec border, Headframe play the type of kitchen-table folk you'd expect from a bunch of close friends. They've been together since 1990 and it shows in their tight harmonies. Playful fiddle mixes with upright bass and the simple voice of Terry Graves to make some fun folk and country. The band doesn't wallow in melancholy the way that so many American folk acts do, but instead celebrate the live and joy of the small town. The band really shines when they add in Eva Graves on piano, which adds a snappy, jazzy feel to the few songs it appears upon, like “Dying by Degrees” and the lead off track “Trains Just Make Her Cry”. You can't help but smile while you listen, especially with song titles like “Talk it Over With Your Dog”. While the band won't win any awards for originality, they don't need to. This is just fun, barn-raising back woods Canadian folk, and it doesn't pretend to be much else.

CD review of Sad Truths & Innocent Lies by Pokey Karol of Cleveland

Dec 5th 2008

"Headframe ranges from lush to stripped down, full or storytelling with a rural feel. Sometimes it's so country you can smell the cows. Other times it takes alt country into the areas of jazz and rock. Its a big sound from a small town, filled with wise and witty lyrics. If there is one thing the Fredheads tend to have in common, it's a love of a song that tells a story good and true. This CD has a lot of that.

If I were going on a long drive, this is one CD I would want in the player."
